Tampere University
I am Soha. Soha means "Morning's brightest star" which is the sun. Just like the sun, my aim is to spread light in everyone's life and enjoy my life to the fullest.

How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here?

It has been 9 months since I came to Tampere. When I was in my home country I was applying to many scholarships and universities but could not secure admission with a scholarship. My friend was already studying in LUT and she suggested I apply for Finland and that's how I ended up here (best decision of my life so far :) )

What subject(s) do you study and what made you choose them?

My master's degree is in Statistical Data Analytics. My major courses include computational diagnostics of big data, data mining, text data analysis, statistical modelling and programming. The reason for choosing this program was that I always wanted to be the best programmer out there. I always wanted to do something that involves coding. And currently I'm doing this and enjoy it a lot.

What do you like most about Tampere and Finland? What has been the most suprising or different thing about living here?

The best thing about Tampere and Finland is that I feel safe here. I have walked on the roads late at night using my phone without the worry of someone harassing me or someone snatching my phone or wallet. The country I come from has these things very common. Tampere has given me freedom. Freedom to go where and when I want, wear what I want and in all do what I want. I love it here :)

What are your hobbies in Tampere? Have you tried out any new hobbies since coming here?

Yes, many :D I am currently taking karate classes for the first time in my life :) I am continuing my passion of painting here and soon I'll have my exhibition :)

What kind of student activities have you participated in?

I'm a part of AIESEC in Finland and have conducted workshops. I'm also a sports coordinator this semester.

What would you say to someone who's trying to decide whether Tampere is the right place to come to study and live?

I would say that don't think twice and come right away. Tampere is full of friendly people and there a lot of activities that you can be a part of. You should have a will.

What is your favourite thing about the student culture in Finland?

Since I'm on a scholarship so I have to complete my credits within 2 years because after that I can't have the scholarship. But when I see Finnish students here, I see them doing all fun with their studies because they seem to have more time and flexibility to complete their degree. Sometimes I wish I should have been born in Finland :P
