Hi I am Mariana! I am currently pursuing my master's degree in Teaching, Learning and Media Education. This photo shows the beautiful colour changes that occur around September and October. This period of time is called 'Ruska' in Finnish, and it refers to the beautiful red, orange and yellow leaves in the trees.

Tell us about yourself and your studies

Hi! I am originally from Mexico City studying for a master's degree in Teaching, Learning and Media Education. I aim to keep on developing my academic career and study a Ph.D after graduation. Being active and involved with other students and with the university activities has made my educational experience more complete, and allowed me to learn more about the Finnish student lifestyle, so I try to participate as much as I can. Through my degree, I have expanded my horizons both socially and intellectually, having the opportunity of sharing thoughts and fun memories everyday with people from all over the globe.

Why did you choose your current programme?

As a sociologist learning about education practices in the global north was paramount for me in order to develop a more complete perspective on education, and so I applied for the programme. Also, the possibility of having a strong core of mandatory subjects along with the opportunity of choosing various elective courses allows me to choose my own path and get involved in the topics I enjoy the most. However, it has been being surrounded by other international students from many different countries and backgrounds that has enriched me and my learning the most.

Can you share with us your experiences in Finland and Tampere?

I believe there is a lot of freedom in how you learn and advance in your career and that allows students to pursue their interests and passions, enjoy their free time, and engage in extracurricular activities. Taking care of oneself and making time to have fun are things that the university and faculty encourage everyone to do, and I think that comes hand in hand with the Finnish way of life and culture. Breathing clean air and enjoying the different landscapes is a beautiful experience you can enjoy every day in Finland. And I personally love the city of Tampere; it is small, yet it manages to surprise you all the time, as you never know how it will suddenly transform when you walk around the next corner. From nice cafés or bars to international cuisine or silent parks the city welcomes students.

What would you say to someone planning to study and live in Tampere?

Settling in Tampere and Finland can be hard because of the language differences and the expenses you have to salvage in the first months. Being prepared and owning my own culture was important for me, because it made me feel a lot more secure and not being afraid to ask for help or use google translate all around. Being prepared for big expenses while you settle in and open an account is important before you can establish a definite budget and reduce your monthly expenses. Stay positive and be prepared for the unexpected!! And of course, enjoy the ride and get the most out of this new adventure!!
