Degree Programmes

At Tampere University in the field of technology, it is possible to complete in English the undergraduate degree Bachelor of Science in Technology (BSc (Tech)), the graduate degrees Master of Science in Architecture (MSc (Arch)) and Master of Science in Technology (MSc (Tech)), and the postgraduate degrees Licentiate of Science in Technology, Doctor of Science in Technology and Doctor of Philosophy.

The undergraduate degree Bachelor of Science in Technology can be completed in English in the International Degree Programme in Science and Engineering, BSc (Tech).

The graduate degrees Master of Science in Architecture and Master of Science in Technology can be completed in English in the following eight degree programmes which have one or more major subjects: Architecture, Automation Engineering, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management, Information Technology, Materials Engineering, and Science and Engineering.

The postgraduate degrees Licentiate of Science in Technology, Doctor of Science in Technology and Doctor of Philosophy can be completed in five degree programmes which are Built Environment, Business and Technology Management, Computing and Electrical Engineering, Engineering and Natural Sciences, and Engineering Sciences.

In Finnish, it is also possible to take the undergraduate degree Bachelor of Science in Technology in six degree programmes. In Finnish, Tampere University in the field of technology, offers twelve graduate degree programmes and five postgraduate degree programmes.

Bachelor of Science in Technology

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology is an undergraduate degree. The scope of the studies required for the degree is 180 credits, which can be completed in three years of full-time study. The students admitted to take the Bachelor of Science in Technology degree also gain a study right to the degree of Master of Science in Technology upon admission to the Bachelor’s programme. The major subject of the Master’s degree is determined by the studies completed in the Bachelor’s degree.

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology can currently be completed in English only in the International Degree Programme in Science and Engineering, BSc (Tech). The degree structure of this programme is the following:

Common core studies are courses which all students take before major and minor subject studies. Common core studies include courses in mathematics, physics, information technology, programming, chemistry, industrial management and languages among others.

The major subject is a 30 credit intermediate study module, which the student can choose freely among the three options. The Bachelor’s thesis is written on the field of the major subject.

The 30 credit minor subject is an intermediate study module chosen from among the three options available. The difference to the major subject is that the Bachelor’s thesis cannot be written in the minor subject. The 20 credit minor subject can be chosen freely among the intermediate study modules available.

Elective studies is not a compulsory study module but a label for courses which cannot be included in any other study module, or for prerequisite studies the knowledge of which is required or recommended to have before taking a more advanced course.

Master of Science in Technology / Architecture

The graduate degrees awarded by Tampere University in the field of technology, are the Master of Science in Technology and Master of Science in Architecture. The scope of the studies required for the degrees is 120 credits. The studies can be completed in two academic years of full-time study.

The degree structure of Master of Science in Technology:

Students address a major subject upon their admission. The major studies give students a wide knowledge on the subject.

Students select an intermediate study module as a minor subject from among the alternatives offered in their degree programmes.

Elective studies is not a compulsory study module as such but a label for courses which cannot be included in any other study module, or for prerequisite studies the knowledge of which is required or recommended to have before taking a more advanced course.

The Master’s thesis is written on the field of the major subject. In connection with the thesis, the student has to write a proficiency test which is an essay written on a topic related to the thesis. The test demonstrates the student's command of the thesis topic. The degree structure of Master of Science in Architecture:

The graduate degree awarded in the Master's Degree Programme in Architecture corresponds to the Finnish degree of "Arkkitehti" and confers eligibility to work as an architect in Finland and other EU countries (according to the 2005/36/EC EU Directive).

Doctor of Science in Technology / Architecture

A study module may include compulsory and/or elective courses. The content of study modules is determined based on the expected learning outcomes. Students may be required to meet prerequisite knowledge requirements before registering for a study module.
