INTENDED LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Gain an overview of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids and lipids
- Gain insidghts on their molecular structure, composition, biosynthesis and properties
- Study and understand some of the chemical reactions of biomolecules
- Gain mechanistic insight on biocatalysis and enzymatic reactions
- Plan and carry out laboratory work on qualitative identification biomolecules including amino acids, proteins and DNA
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After completion of the course the participants are able to:
- Identify and classify various biomolecules such as carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids and lipids
- Correlate structure of biomolecules to reactivity
- Plan and carry out laboratory work in a correct and safe manner
- Explain the principles of molecular mechanism and functions of biomolecules
- Identify potential applications of biomolecules

- Carbohydrate detection: Qualitative analysis
- Qualitative tests for amino acids and proteins: fingerprint detection
- Synthesis and characterization of a glucose derivative
- DNA isolation from cells
