INTENDED LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Gain an overview of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids and lipids
  • Gain insidghts on their molecular structure, composition, biosynthesis and properties
  • Study and understand some of the chemical reactions of biomolecules
  • Gain mechanistic insight on biocatalysis and enzymatic reactions
  • Plan and carry out laboratory work on qualitative identification biomolecules including amino acids, proteins and DNA
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After completion of the course the participants are able to:

  • Identify and classify various biomolecules such as carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids and lipids
  • Correlate structure of biomolecules to reactivity
  • Plan and carry out laboratory work in a correct and safe manner
  • Explain the principles of molecular mechanism and functions of biomolecules
  • Identify potential applications of biomolecules

  • Chemistry of carbohydrates
  • Amino acids, peptides and proteins
  • Chemistry and biology nucleic acids: central dogma of life
  • Functional importance of vitamins, lipids, and enzymes
LABORATORY WORK:
  • Carbohydrate detection: Qualitative analysis
  • Qualitative tests for amino acids and proteins: fingerprint detection
  • Synthesis and characterization of a glucose derivative
  • DNA isolation from cells
