Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to give the student the necessary knowledge to execute a systematic literature review. After successful completion of the course, the student will

- know different types of review methods and their features

- understand what a systematic literature review is, its purpose and aims

- know the different stages of a systematic literature review

- be able to plan a review that is appropriate for his/her research questions and carry out the literature search, analysis and synthesis

- be able to report on the review process, its results and conclusions.


Target audience

Doctoral students interested in conducting a systematic literature review.

Pre-course assignment

Watch the presentation “Systematic Reviews: What Are They and How To Do Them” by Professor Rumona Dickson, LRiG, on http://pcwww.liv.ac.uk/ehls/dickson/systematic-reviews/ and write a short (1-2 pages) text describing the steps in conducting a systematic review. Explain what PICO stands for and how it might apply to your own research. Also, include in the text your name, discipline, topic and aims of your research, reasons for wanting to conduct a systematic literature review, and finally, what do you hope to learn from the course.
