The course focuses on the theme of the 2020 Gender Studies Conference, “Reclaiming Futures.” The conference theme explores futures as matters of intense politics, imaginings and debates from feminist and intersectional perspectives, and suggests that how futures are envisioned and contested has significant implications for equality and social justice and the very possibilities of a livable world. The course includes the following elements: 1) We have two meetings before the conference during which we explore how futures have emerged as an object of politics, and how visions of futures have been debated, negotiated and contested in feminist research. Students read selected articles for the meetings and write a short commentary before each meeting. 2) During the conference, each student attends a minimum of two plenaries (out of four) and at least one workshop session of their choice. 3) We have a final meeting a week after the conference where we unpack the conference experience and reflect on how the conference developed, continued or departed from the literature we read before the conference. Before the end of the term, each student hands in a conference report, in which they reflect on the conference sessions they attended in relation to the materials and discussions covered in class.
