Duration of project1.6.2026–31.5.2029
Area of focusTechnology

The SYSIX – Smart and Efficient Energy Systems for Offroad mobile machines for remote locations project develops next-generation solutions to enable the electrification of non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) in weak-grid and off-grid environments. The project delivers concrete outcomes, including intelligent machine and energy management systems, advanced battery management strategies, modular multi-energy charging containers, and validated models for hybrid and electric powertrains. By integrating data-driven and physics-based modelling with experimental validation, SYSIX will create scalable frameworks for optimizing energy use, improving reliability, and extending machine lifetime while lowering total costs of ownership. Coordinated by Tampere University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the consortium unites leading Finnish companies to pilot real-world demonstrators, develop technology roadmaps, and establish new business models for sustainable mobile machinery. The results will strengthen Finland’s global leadership in zero-emission and intelligent NRMM technologies, supporting the targets of the National Mobile Machine Growth Strategy 2035.

Goal

The main objective of the SYSIX Joint Action Project is to provide companies with solutions that enable the effective deployment and use of electrified machinery in weak-grid and off-grid applications, particularly in remote working environments. The research design and selection of research questions (RQ1 – RQ3) have been carried out in close collaboration with participating companies, ensuring that the Public Research Project SYSIX directly addresses their practical needs and strategic priorities.

  • RQ1: "What are the key criteria for optimizing charging infrastructure and powertrain topologies in remote and extreme environments to balance system complexity and operational efficiency?"
  • RQ2: "What strategies, including buffer-based solutions, can be implemented to ensure 24/7 productivity and reliability of charging infrastructure in weak or off-grid locations?"
  • RQ3: "What strategies and technologies can ensure long-term sustainability and reliable operation of charging infrastructure in weak or off-grid locations (remote and extreme environments)?"

The technological goal of the project is to develop and trial intelligent machine management and charging systems with the best business models applied for remote locations with weak or off-grid operations.

Impact

The Public Research Project SYSIX will advance machine management and energy-supply solutions for weak-grid and off-grid environments by applying digital twins, data- and physics-based modelling, and AI. These technologies will improve the accuracy, reliability, and efficiency of remotely operated systems and enable breakthroughs in energy logistics. SYSIX will build on previous research and existing trial platforms, expanding them to meet the needs of participating companies.

Overall impact: SYSIX will strengthen the capabilities and competitiveness of Finnish industries by enabling cost-effective, reliable, and sustainable operation of electrified machinery in weak-grid and off-grid conditions.
