GEREC is a collaborative effort in ageing research run jointly by the University of Jyväskylä and Tampere University. GEREC was set up to produce new scientific knowledge on the life, health and functioning of the ageing population. Our aim is to increase understanding of the prerequisites for enjoying a meaningful life across the lifespan. We also participate in university education and seek to further expertise in the field of ageing.

Research focus and goals
Gerec’s research covers a wide range of topics related to older people and the ageing society. Research on health and functional capacity and their determinants will provide insights into active ageing and its links to biological processes, physical activity habits and well-being. Research focusing on care and services provided by society to older people will provide information on the service needs of an ageing society.
Major research themes
- Active ageing, life-space mobility and physical activity
- Health, physical and cognitive functioning, dementia and biological ageing
- Life course, retirement and agency
- Services, care and politics
