Tiina Silander appointed Vice President for Education, Tapio Visakorpi to continue as Vice President for Research

At its meeting on 7 October 2026, the Board of the Tampere University Foundation appointed Tiina Silander, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Culture, as Vice President for Education and Tapio Visakorpi as Vice President for Research for the term 1 January 2027 – 31 December 2031.

The Vice Presidents are responsible for the strategic management and development of Tampere University nationally and internationally in their respective fields.

In the appointment of the Vice President for Education, emphasis was placed on the extensive knowledge of the academic operating environment and higher education policy, demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary organisations, and research-based competence and experience in the development of university education and pedagogy. In addition, emphasis was placed on networks related to education at different levels of education.

In the appointment of the Vice President for Research, emphasis was placed on the strong knowledge of the research and science policy operating environment, experience in the management of research organisations, and expertise in the development of research funding, research infrastructures and research ecosystems.

"Tiina Silander and Tapio Visakorpi were selected from the excellent pool of applicants as a result of a multi-stage and thorough selection process. They bring strong leadership experience, extensive and complementary expertise and strategic vision to the university's management. Under their leadership, we can continue to determinedly develop our university's education, research and international impact," says President of Tampere University Keijo Hämäläinen.

Tiina Silander will transfer to the position of Vice President from the position of Dean of the Faculty of Education and Culture. She has previously served as Director at the Ministry of Education and Culture, and as Director of the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Jyväskylä. Professor of Cancer Genetics Tapio Visakorpi has served as Vice President for Research at Tampere University since 2022.
