Student story: Carlotta from Chemistry

What have been the highlights during your BSc studies?
The best course in my opinion is the Research Training. There, I was part of a research group working on a real research problem. This allowed me to get hands-on experience and use all the knowledge that I gained from the theoretical and laboratory courses. This course really helps to figure out if you like research or not.
What are the Chemistry studies like?
Generally, the Chemistry department, especially in the English programme, is quite small. This is great because the teachers can help you more individually. One time even the course contents got adjusted to the needs of the few students in my year.
Other than that, there are a lot of different types of courses i.e. lectures, small group teaching and laboratory courses. And because the laboratory courses start already in the third semester, you can directly apply your knowledge from the theory courses. Sometimes information that I learned felt useless. This was not the case in this programme.
How do you like living in Tampere?
I play flute and I was able to join the student orchestra and a student brass band right away. There are so many different clubs that there is definitely something for everybody.
The student culture here is amazing as well. This year I am one of the fuksi captains for our programme. This means that I help the new students settle in and introduce them to the student culture. Of course, there are a lot of parties happening but also so many other events. My personal favourite are sitsits. There you sit around a table and eat dinner but also follow a plan of singing songs and playing some games.
I also really like the city of Tampere itself. It is quite urban, but a beautiful nature is only a few minutes away.
Who would you recommend this programme to?
I would recommend this programme to everybody that appreciate smaller and more flexible courses. Especially, research and laboratory courses have a huge focus in this university. But there are also a lot of fairs for everyone who wants to form connections into the industry right away. Also, the student culture here is worth experiencing!
