Pelsmakers will assume her new position in August 2026.

Professor Sofie Pelsmakers has been appointed as the new Director of the Tampere Institute for Advanced Study (Tampere IAS). She will take up the role on 1 August 2026. The fixed-term appointment is part-time (50%) and will continue until 31 December 2028. Pelsmakers will also retain her current position as Professor at the School of Architecture on a part-time basis.

The Director is responsible for the oversight and strategic development of Tampere IAS as well as for organising funding for its activities. The new Director will also be responsible for preparing proposals to support the Institute’s continued development. Tampere IAS underwent an external review in the spring, providing a strong foundation for its future development.

“We are delighted that Sofie was available for the position of Director of Tampere IAS. She has already proposed development ideas that we will begin to advance together next autumn,” says Tapio Visakorpi, Vice President for Research at Tampere University.

”It is an honour to have been selected as the next Tampere IAS Director and to build on Juha Teperi’s strong foundation and legacy. I also look forward to contributing to and co-developing both the Tampere IAS and our wider university research culture with colleagues across the University,” says Sofie Pelsmakers, future Director of Tampere IAS.

Tampere IAS began operating in its current form in August 2021 under the leadership of Juha Teperi, who is now due to retire. During Teperi’s five-year term, Tampere IAS has developed into a multidisciplinary research community that maintains close collaboration with the faculties at Tampere University. Tampere IAS is an integral part of the University’s strategy and supports its ambitious goals to enhance the quality and impact of research. The Institute awards research fellowships in all the disciplines represented at the University.

Tampere University received four applications for the position of Director of Tampere IAS following an internal call for applications.
