Shahroz Ahmed: Heat treatment has a significant impact on the strength and formability of medium manganese steels

In his doctoral dissertation, MSc (Tech) Shahroz Ahmed showed that the strength, ductility and deformation behaviour of medium manganese steels are strongly affected by how the steels are heat-treated. Ahmed found that heat treatment at temperatures close to a critical phase transformation point can cause uneven deformation at room temperature, while higher treatment temperatures improve the balance between strength and formability. Using advanced X-ray measurements during tensile testing at a synchrotron research facility, he investigated the mechanisms behind this behaviour. His results also showed that both the initial structure of the steel and the partition temperature used in the final heat-treatment stage influence the steel's final properties. The research findings make it possible to use stronger and more formable steels, for example, to reduce the weight of passenger cars without compromising on strength.

The doctoral dissertation titled Tensile Behavior of Intercritically Annealed Medium Manganese Steels by M.Sc. (Tech.) Shahroz Ahmed will be publicly examined in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University on 18 September 2026. The dissertation is in the field of Materials Science.
