As a line manager or leader, do you know how multilocational digitalised work affects your team’s well-being and work performance? Tampere University researchers are conducting a study aimed at increasing our understanding of how the planning and management of multilocational digitalised work affect teams’ day-to-day operations. The study will also investigate what factors support success.

The study examines teams whose members work in a variety of locations – such as in the office and remotely – either together or in a decentralised manner.

“The study is part of the WorkWell project, funded by Business Finland, which aims to produce new research findings to improve well-being at work, performance and the organisation of work in a changing world of work,” says Tampere University Professor and the project leader Anne Mäkikangas.

Participating organisations will receive an organisation-specific summary of the research findings, as well as research-based recommendations for improving well-being at work and performance within their teams.

“The results can also be presented on an organisation-by-organisation basis in a manner to be agreed separately. It would be extremely valuable to involve several teams from the same organisation, as this would mean, the organisation-specific summary would be based on more comprehensive data. The survey offers organisations and teams the opportunity to examine the effects of multilocational digitalised work on their day-to-day working lives," Mäkikangas continues.

The survey only takes a few minutes a day

The study will be carried out over the course of one working week. Members of the participating teams will complete an online questionnaire once a day at the end of the working day. It takes approximately five minutes to complete.

The questionnaires will be sent directly to participants by email via a secure survey system. The questions cover, amongst other things, work tasks during the working day, collaboration, and experiences of well-being at work and work performance. Data collection is scheduled to take place in October–November 2026, but the study’s timetable can be adapted to suit the needs of the participating organisations.

The project is being carried out jointly by the Work Research Centre and the Cost Management Center in Tampere University. The aim is to develop a model for sustainable working life when multilocational digitalised work challenges companies to innovate. The three-year WorkWell project includes experts from work psychology, and financial and performance management. Six pioneering companies have been selected to co-develop a sustainable and well-being-enhancing working life.
