QS compares academic disciplines – information studies remains among the world’s leading fields

A wide range of disciplines and subject areas at Tampere University are included in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject. Among these, information studies ranks particularly highly, placing 12th globally among universities. The latest results are presented in QS’s subject-specific rankings, published this spring.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 compares universities across five broad subject areas and 55 individual disciplines. 

Looking more closely at individual subjects, information studies stands out among the world’s top institutions, ranked 12th. In QS’s classification, the field is referred to as Library and Information Management, within which 100 universities are ranked.

In the QS comparison, broad academic fields are divided into subject areas. Tampere University achieves a ranking in a total of 15 subject categories.

In their respective rankings Communication and Media Studies is placed in the 150–200 range,  Educational Science ranks within the top 250, Sociology and Electrical and Electronic Engineering fall within the 251–300 bracket and English Language and Literature and Materials Science are both ranked within the top 350. 

QS uses a range of indicators, with varying weightings, to determine university rankings. The indicators include academic reputation, research citations, employer reputation, graduate employability, student-to-staff ration, number of international academic staff and international students, international research networks and sustainability. 

In the previous overall QS World University Rankings, Tampere University was ranked 423rd. The updated overall ranking is usually published in the summer.
