The Unit of Communication Sciences is pleased to host an open lecture by Distinguished Professor Patrice Buzzanell, entitled Affective Sensemaking in Communicative Resilience, on Thursday, 29 October, from 13:15 to 14:30 in Pinni B 1096.

Professor Patrice Buzzanell is an internationally recognized and wide-ranging communication scholar. Her research has focused on for instance work-life policy, careers, resilience, gender, and engineering design in micro-macro contexts. Buzzanell is an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow, one of the most prestigious honors awarded to researchers in the United States and has been listed in the 2025 Stanford Science Career Rankings.

Buzzanell is particularly known for developing the theory of communicative resilience. In this theory, resilience is understood not as an individual characteristic but as a constitutive social process enacted through language and interaction. The theory has been applied in studies of workplace interaction, organizational change, and family communication.

In her lecture, Professor Buzzanell will explore resilience from an affective perspective, examining how people make sense of challenging and uncertain situations through communication. The lecture offers timely insights into how individuals and communities can collectively build resilience in the face of change, crises, and adversity.

Professor Buzzanell is visiting Tampere University as a guest professor in the research project Citizens’ behavior change towards sustainable energy transition through social interaction funded by Research Council of Finland.

A warm welcome to all!
