Nokia and Tampere University’s long-term research collaboration strengthens Finland’s technological expertise and capability

Behind the innovations that have found their way into everyday life and industry are years of research, countless solved challenges and a shared vision for the future.
"Together, we will continue to develop technologies that lay the foundation for future products, services and business opportunities. Research results are disseminated through international standards, enabling their widespread adoption around the world," says Professor Roope Raisamo of Tampere University, whose field of expertise is human-technology interaction.
Several flagship projects are currently underway in the field of human-technology interaction, involving dozens of partner companies. In addition to Nokia, some of these projects are linked to flagship programmes led by Ponsse-EPEC, Patria, Sandvik, AMD Silo AI and Mirka. Research is also being carried out in several European Horizon Europe projects.
The importance of research collaboration continues to grow
Research collaboration is particularly important in today’s global environment. Wars, crises and uncertainty associated with multiple ongoing transitions are affecting the wellbeing and security of societies and their citizens. This inevitably shapes the priorities of research.
"The role of research in strengthening societal resilience, security of supply and security is becoming increasingly important," says Jarmo Takala, Vice President responsible for collaboration networks and partnerships at Tampere University.
In recent years, system-on-chip design has emerged as a key area of collaboration. The SoC Hub, coordinated by Tampere University and Nokia, is developing European expertise in system-on-chip technologies and strengthening the sector’s competitiveness at a time when the importance of semiconductor technologies is rapidly increasing across industries.
Another research area of growing significance is dual-use technologies, which can be applied in both civilian and security sectors.
New partners welcome
Collaboration between Nokia and Tampere University brings together fundamental research, industry development needs and international research networks in a way that accelerates the creation of new innovations and their adoption in society. It provides researchers with opportunities to develop solutions and expertise that address real-world needs in industry and society.
"The greatest value of collaboration does not come from individual projects. It comes from researchers, students, companies and other partners working together to build the solutions of the future. The most impactful innovations emerge in ecosystems," says Pauli Kuosmanen, Director of Research and Innovation Services at Tampere University.
At a seminar held in early October, Nokia and Tampere University presented the results of their research collaboration to stakeholders. Participants were able to experience the outcomes first-hand through 35 demonstrations showcasing technologies and research innovations in practice.
The event also highlighted future collaboration needs and opportunities.
"The work around the research themes presented at the seminar will continue, deepen and expand. We are looking for additional partners whose expertise complements that of Nokia and Tampere University. It is important for us to share information about future collaboration opportunities," says Kuosmanen.
