In his doctoral dissertation in the field of education, Jussi Hänninen, Master of Arts (Education), examined the expertise and collaboration required in unplanned out-of-hospital deliveries. The results suggest that in unplanned out-of-hospital childbirth events, the shared object should be to achieve an overall positive childbirth experience that includes childbirth safety. Midwives’ involvement was identified as a key factor in achieving a positive outcome. A dialogic activity concept developed over the course of the study, named co-configurative knotworking, respects the active agency of people giving birth in unplanned out-of-hospital deliveries while levelling out equality differences between different delivery models.

The public examination of Master of Arts (Education) Jussi Hänninen’s doctoral dissertation in the field of education, Suunnittelemattomat sairaalan ulkopuoliset synnytykset synnyttäjien, maallikkoavustajien ja ammattilaisten toimintajärjestelmissä: kohti yhteiskehittelevää solmutyöskentelyä, will be held at the Faculty of Education and Culture of Tampere University on Friday, 11 December 2026.

Professor Marianne Teräs of Stockholm University will serve as the opponent. Professor Hanna Toiviainen of the Faculty of Education and Culture, Tampere University, will serve as the custos.
