In her doctoral dissertation, M.Sc. (Tech.) Heidi Halonen developed novel methods for studying how cells respond to vibration stimulation. The stimulation devices and image analysis methods developed in the work enable both the investigation of early cellular responses in living cells and the efficient execution of long-term cell studies. The research showed that the effects of mechanical stimulation depend on both the cell type and the way the stimulus is transmitted to cellular structures. The tools developed in the study provide new opportunities for mechanobiology research and may contribute to advances in disease modelling, drug discovery, and tissue engineering.

The doctoral dissertation of M.Sc. (Tech.) Heidi Halonen in the field of biomedical engineering titled Development of Vibration Stimulus Technologies for Cellular Mechanobiology Studies will be publicly examined in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University on 21 August 2026.

The Opponent will be Professor Emeritus Timo Jämsä from the University of Oulu. The Custos will be Professor Jari Hyttinen from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, Tampere University.
