Would you like to study in a new environment, improve your language skills and explore your field from a different perspective? During the autumn application round, you can apply for student exchange in destinations including the United States, Canada, Tanzania, South Africa and Australia for exchange studies in the academic year 2027–28. Explore the options and find the right exchange destination for you.

Study abroad and make your new skills part of your degree

Student exchange gives you the opportunity to experience a new university, culture and way of studying. At the same time, you can improve your language skills, become more independent and develop your ability to work in an international environment. The studies you complete during your exchange will be planned as part of your degree at Tampere University. Students selected for a Tampere University exchange destination do not pay tuition fees to the host university, and Tampere University provides every selected student with a travel grant. Depending on the destination, students will have expenses related to travel, accommodation, insurance, visas or local student fees. An exchange is about more than taking new courses. It is an opportunity to make friends from around the world, understand different perspectives and return to Tampere with new ideas, experiences and skills.

What kind of exchange destination would suit you?

In the United States, you can experience campus life where studies, student life, events and leisure activities are closely connected. The wide range of universities allows you to look for courses that complement your degree and may not be available at Tampere University. Destinations vary considerably, so compare factors such as course offerings, costs, available study levels, campus location and accommodation options carefully.

Canada offers high-quality education in English and, at some destinations, also in French. Its multicultural university cities give you the opportunity to meet people with different backgrounds and perspectives while developing your language skills through both your studies and everyday life. Depending on the destination, you might study in a major city, a smaller university town or on a campus surrounded by nature.

In Tanzania, you can explore subjects such as social sciences, public administration and business from an East African perspective. Teaching is in English, but an exchange also gives you the opportunity to learn about the Swahili language and experience everyday life in Tanzania. This destination is particularly suitable for students who are prepared to work independently, approach different practices with an open mind and learn outside the classroom as well as within it.

South Africa combines a multicultural society, a strong higher education system and a present day shaped visibly by the country’s history. An exchange can give you new perspectives on topics such as social change, sustainability, the economy and inequality. The country has much to offer, but it is important to check the destination’s practical arrangements, costs, semester dates and any student fees carefully before applying.

Australia offers education in English in a multicultural environment. The exchange destination in Adelaide gives you the opportunity to experience Australian student culture and life in a city where university studies and leisure opportunities are within easy reach. When planning your exchange, remember to consider the long distance, travel costs and the Australian academic calendar, which differs from that of many other exchange destinations.

How do I apply for student exchange?

First, explore the exchange destinations in the Mobility-Online portal and read the instructions on the application process, funding and exchange-related costs in the Student’s Guide. Then carefully prepare your application and a preliminary study plan for each destination.

If you are studying in an English-taught degree programme, you must obtain approval for your exchange application from your education specialist and attach the approval to your application. Master’s degree students should also note that many exchange destinations offer courses at bachelor’s level only. Check the level and availability of courses for each destination before applying.

The autumn application round is for exchange destinations outside Europe. Apply by 16 November 2026 and take the next step towards your own exchange experience! European exchange destinations and all north2north exchange destinations will be included in the January application round.
