Faculties have made decisions on costs related to the public examination.

Costs associated with defending a doctoral dissertation 

The practices concerning the reimbursement of costs incurred in relation to the public defence of a doctoral dissertation varied between the two universities that were merged to create Tampere University and their faculties. Tampere University has now adopted a consistent policy that applies to all the faculties.&nbsp;

As outlined by the Management Group of Tampere University, the faculty of a doctoral candidate will cover the following costs: 

<ul>
	<li class="x">the costs of renting a space for the public defence, the opponent’s travel and accommodation costs, and the fees paid to the pre-examiners and opponent (no per diem allowance), and&nbsp;</li>
	<li class="x">the costs of printing the required number of copies of the candidate’s dissertation and, if necessary, the costs of proofreading.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

The Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC) has issued the following guidelines for the reimbursement of hospitality costs: &nbsp;

Dinner on the night before a public defence&nbsp;&nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>The faculty will cover the costs, provided that they are reasonable and do not exceed €500 (this sum is based on the assumption that no more than five persons attend).</li>
</ul>

Lunch before and refreshments during a public defence (3-5 people)&nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>The faculty will cover the costs of lunch served before the public defence and the refreshments provided at the public defence.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

Coffee and refreshments after a public defence &nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>The faculty will cover the reasonable costs of coffee and refreshments (the campus assistants and head of administration will specify/monitor the costs).</li>
</ul>

&nbsp;Congratulatory flowers for a doctoral candidate &nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>The faculty will not cover the costs of flowers.</li>
</ul>

&nbsp;Costs of hiring a tailcoat for opponents who do not own one&nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>The faculty will cover the costs if necessary.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC)

The Faculty of Management and Business will reimburse the following expenses for the time being:

<ul>
	<li>&nbsp;Language revision of the dissertation and the articles included in it, if no external funding is available</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Dissertation printing costs for the obligatory copies (18 copies)</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Fees for the pre-examiners and the opponents (450 € for the pre-examiner, 550 € for the opponent)</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Travel and accommodation expenses for the opponent using the most economical means of travel, maximum 2 nights, no per diems</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Hire of the opponent's dress suit if necessary</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Dissertation venue rent</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Dinner for the opponent on the evening before the dissertation day (opponent, supervisor, doctoral candidate), if applicable, max. 120 €/person and joint expenses max. 500 €</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Dissertation day lunch (opponent, supervisor, doctoral candidate)</li>
	<li>&nbsp;Bottled water for the dissertation</li>
	<li>&nbsp;General post-dissertation coffee party open to all (max. 50 people) on campus</li>
</ul>

Faculty of Management and Business (MAB)

The faculty covers facilities costs, the opponent’s travel and accommodation costs and the fees of the opponent and the preliminary examiner (however, no per diems).

The faculty offers max. 300 euros for the pre-defence dinner / lunch for doctoral candidate, custos and opponent, or cake and coffee after the defence for the guests.

Faculty of Education and Culture (EDU)

The Dean has supplemented these instructions by the President’s management group and stated the following for the defence costs at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology: 

The Faculty shall cover: 

<ul>
	<li>rent for the rooms used for the defence, the travel and accommodation costs of the opponent (maximum of 2 nights in a single room) as well as the fees for the pre examiners and opponents (450€ for the pre-examiner and 550€ for the opponent, no daily allowance) </li>
	<li>the printing costs of the mandatory doctoral thesis copies (9 copies, does not include copies distributed at the public defence) </li>
	<li>the lunch before the defence and the refreshments for the defence for the doctoral candidate, opponent and custos </li>
	<li>the rent of a tailcoat for the opponent if necessary </li>
	<li>if no other party will cover the coffee service costs, the Faculty will sponsor the coffee service after the defence with a maximum of 200 euros  </li>
</ul>

The doctoral defence costs of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology will be allocated to the internal order number 31000421. 

These instructions will come into effect on 15.4.2019.

Reimbursement of Dissertation Costs at the Faculty of Built Environment (BEN)

At its meeting on 12 February 2019, the University's Executive Team brought up for discussion the practices of reimbursing dissertation costs, which have differed from one faculty to another. From now on all faculties will share a common policy on reimbursing the dissertation costs.

&nbsp;

The Faculties of Tampere University will pay the following dissertation costs:

• the rent of the lecture room/auditorium where the doctoral defence takes place; travel and accommodation costs for the opponent; opponent’s and pre-examiners’ fees (no daily allowance)

• the cost of printing the compulsory copies of the dissertation and, when required, the language revision of the dissertation

• lunch prior to the doctoral defence (opponent, custos, doctoral candidate) and refreshments during the defence

• the rent of a tailcoat for the opponent, when needed

&nbsp;

In addition, the Faculty of Built Environment hereby undertakes to pay the following dissertation costs:

• dinner the night before the doctoral defence (opponent, custos, doctoral candidate)

• coffee after the defence

• printing costs of 50 copies of the doctoral dissertation, including the compulsory copies

&nbsp;

This decision shall remain in force until further notice.

Faculty of Built Environment (BEN)

THE DEFENCE COSTS THE FACULTY&nbsp;PAYS

	<li>room rent of the public defence auditorium/lecture room and other rooms needed</li>

	<li>printing costs of the dissertation (19 books, possible additional copies from agreement)</li>
	<li>copy editing of the dissertation, if needed, from agreement</li>
	<li>lunch before the defence for the candidate, custos and opponent</li>
	<li>bottled water for the defence</li>
	<li>tailcoat rent for the opponent if needed</li>
	<li>possible dinner costs of the evening before the defence for the opponent, candidate and custos (max. 120 euros/person and together max. 500 euros)</li>
	<li>open coffee event after the defence on the campus, max. 50 persons</li>
