Tampere Universities (Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences, TAMK) and ABB Oy, a global technology leader in electrification and automation, have signed a partnership agreement on 17 August 2026. Through this partnership, the parties aim to bring together world-class research, education and industry to advance the green transition while reinforcing Finland’s position as an international pioneer in power electronics and electrification.

“The competitiveness of both Finland and Europe is increasingly built on research, expertise and the capacity of companies to renew themselves. Together with ABB, we are building a strong innovation ecosystem that will attract talent, investments and new initiatives to Finland,” says Keijo Hämäläinen, President of Tampere University.

“Our strategic partnerships with Tampere Universities will provide ABB with broader opportunities to strengthen expertise in power electronics and develop the solutions needed by an increasingly electrified society. Power electronics plays a central role in advancing the green transition, driving industrial renewal and enhancing Finland’s competitiveness,” says Sailamarja Kähkönen, Managing Director of ABB Oy.

The strategic partnership covers educational collaboration, educational development as well as joint development and innovation activities. The partnership will also support the development of expertise and facilitate collaboration on thesis projects, student projects and internships.

“Our strong, long-standing relationships with industry and employers are an important part of our societal impact. This strategic partnership with ABB will provide our students with an even wider range of opportunities to learn, participate in development initiatives and contribute to shaping the future of industry,” says Mika Hannula, President of Tampere University of Applied Sciences.
