Transdisciplinary action for urban sustainability
TURNS Research Platform catalyzes innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research by bringing together urban studies, transition studies, and sustainability science. As a strategic and long-term initiative, TURNS increases Tampere University’s scientific and societal impact regarding urban research in Finland and internationally.
TURNS seeks eye-opening conceptualizations and transformative solutions for the urban and spatial aspects of Tampere University’s three research foci: health, society and technology. It emphasizes curiosity-led and scientifically courageous research on cities and urban regions outside the much-studied metropolitan areas, addressing, for example, medium-sized cities and towns, Europe’s shrinking margins, or critical questions in the global South.
TURNS brings together various research fields and joins experts from different faculties of Tampere University and beyond. As a research platform, it enables interaction and partnerships between Tampere University and various public organisations, private companies, and third-sector actors.
TURNS organizes activities from research seminars to writing retreats and from PhD workshops to international conferences. It offers seed funding and mobility funding to support new research initiatives and international networking.
TURNS produces multidisciplinary Tampere Urban Research Perspectives blog in collaboration with the Sustainable Transformation of Urban Environments (STUE) profiling area and the Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) degree program of Tampere University.
