TACKLEHATE is a joint project with Tampere University and University of Eastern Finland (UEF). The main leader of this project is the professor of cultural studies Tuija Saresma from UEF. The team leader at Tampere University is the professor of media studies Kaarina Nikunen.
We are researching new means for content management on social media platforms and seeking to enhance socially sustainable platforms. Root causes for the increasing problem of online hate are the algorithmic structures and business models of digital platforms that give visibility to highly affective content, such as hate arousing user traffic and engagement.
We are mapping existing tools and compiling previous anti-hate speech work to build a long-term repository and info archive of research and journalistic articles and other materials, including educational and training materials on encountering and tackling hate speech. We are developing a mobile adventure game and an informative online comic aimed at children and youngsters to help dealing with hate speech they encounter in online environments.
