RemoteFeel - Digital Feel for Accurate Operation of Work Machines

Tampere University
Area of focusSociety, Technology

Operating of heavy work machines remotely can bring many benefits, such as improved safety, ergonomics, flexibility, performance, and the structure of the machines.

However, the technology currently available for remote operation does not allow for the desired level of performance nor provide the remote operator with a proper feel of operating the machine.

The goal of RemoteFeel is to develop next-generation remote operation tools. The research includes three main areas: 1. User experience, 2. Visual feedback, and 3. Multimodal interaction.

Currently, the view from the machine and its complex environment is provided to the operator through multiple 2D displays, which the operator has to simultaneously follow, or switch their attention between several camera feeds according to the current task.

This leads to a high cognitive load and limits the amount of information available, further adding stress to the already demanding safety critical work. Furthermore, latency and capability to accurate work are crucial in allowing the high levels of precision and speed needed for efficient operation of heavy machinery.

The goal of RemoteFeel is to build a remote operation platform which allows companies to tailor remote operation solutions to their specific needs, and achieve working conditions where heavy work machines can be operated more efficiently, safely, and pleasantly.
