MBD - Model Based Definition

Funded by the EU
Tampere University of Applied Sciences
Duration of project1.12.2021–31.8.2023

- Identify existing technologies and offerings and existing and necessary
know-how
- Developing the educational environment and educational concept
- Trainings both online and as hands-on trainings in the training environment (such as TAMKin FieldLab)

Goal

Model-Based Definition (MBD) refers to the complete definition of product information using a 3D model, without traditional drawings. MBD makes it possible to achieve paperless production where
the drawings are converted to digital, including all information related to the manufacture of the product. Data is created and is used in many different ways as automated as possible without manual data transfer
system to system.
The better the company's product information management, the more likely the whole MBD data will be
the exploiting ecosystem has a correct and up-to-date version of the product information at its disposal. In this case, resources can be efficiently utilised at every stage of the life cycle.
In global industry, MBD has become standard practice and is becoming more common around the world. Currently method especially by the automotive and aircraft industries. MBD is also becoming more common in other industries, and in particular in Pirkanmaa, which has a large number of engineering industries, MBD expertise should be increased in order to maintain the competitiveness of companies in manufacturing ecosystems in the future.

In Pirkanmaa, interest and the need to utilise and deploy model-based product specifications have been verified
by METSTA, of which TAMK is in the a committee. Pilot and innovation infrastructure for shared use is not
existing in the area, but TAMK has a research, testing and a training environment that could be utilised as part of the network of experts and common infrastructure created in the project.

This project will implement a model-based product specification to increase competence and capability
the following:
- Studies and surveys: Identify existing technologies and offerings and existing and necessary
know-how
- Developing the educational environment and educational concept
- Trainings both online and as hands-on trainings in the educational environment

As a result of the project, participants, i.e. employed manufacturing persons and students,
expertise is increasing in relation to model-based product specification. As a result, the competitiveness of enterprises will increase, and it will remain in manufacturing ecosystems in the future.
The project will result in an educational concept that best suits skills needs, with online training and hands-on training.

In addition, a training environment that serves the needs of the target group and a cooperation network MBD awareness will be created and skills.
The impact of the project will create a common vision of pirkanmaa actors and roadmap MBD expertise and
to take capability forward throughout the industrial manufacturing ecosystem.
