Immersive Media Disruption (IMD)

Tampere University

Immersive Media Disruption (IMD) is an initiative of industry and academic partners to advance the technology field of immersive media and virtual reality (VR). The project focuses on the following areas:

  • New formats for immersive media storytelling
  • Immersive  audio-visual technologies
  • Immersive content production and distribution
  • Immersive media user experience
  • New immersive media business models

Background

Pilots and trials are key elements of the project. The project partners successfully completed the first 360-degree recording pilot, using a multi-camera setup with Nokia OZOs and a complex audio set-up at the Helsinki Music Centre during a performance of the Alpen Symphony of Richard Strauss by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The second pilot project is called Vanishing World. It is a documentary series by Aito Media on the different regions around the globe which represent the effects of climate change. The first part of Vanishing World was filmed at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Virtual reality introduces a new layer to media experience. The aim of the project is to explore, and show, how utilizing VR affects the production, workflows, and the end user experience.
