Freedom and responsibility in popular adult education (SVV)

SVV is a contractual collaboration programme between national organizations of popular adult education and universities of Tampere, Eastern Finland and Åbo Akademi, promoting research and research-based development of the field. Main activities include

  • national and regional research seminars and other events supporting research discussion and supervision of thesis research, which are also organized in annual events in popular adult education
  • popularization of research, supported by training for popularization
  • joint publications.

Background

SVV programme builds on longterm collaboration between popular adult education organizations and research community. Since 2011 it is based on agreement between the parties. SVV is coordinated by VST ry (Finnish Adult Education Association), but the practices have mainly been taken care by the junior researchers of the programme. There are several doctoral and MA theses produced in the programme, numerous articles and edited books published both in Finnish and English. Goal

SVV programme brings together researchers, practitioners and policy makers in the field of popular adult education. It promotes collaboration especially in thesis research (MA and doctoral theses). The aim of the programme is to improve the accessibility and usability of research, also in decision-making and in promotion of interests of popular adult education. Furthermore, it aims to increase societal impact and visibility of research. The programme updates annually an action plan. The current theme is structural changes and transforming citizenship. SVV collaborates actively with international research community of popular adult education, especially between Nordic countries, for example through joint conferences and publications.
