Finnish Solar Revolution (FSR)

Tampere University

FSR is a joint research project of three universities on control and optimization of solar photovoltaic power production under variable climatic conditions and on connecting them to different types of power grids. Key research topics are smoothing power balance and voltage fluctuations of weather dependent power production, maintaining stability and voltage control in micro-grids, disturbance management when connected solar PV power production to electric grids, reliability and lifecycle management of PV systems via condition monitoring and production optimization and future business models and scenarios of solar PV power.

Goal

FSR is a research consortium of three universities and 15 companies having a joint public research project and company specific confidential research projects. The goal of the projects is to ensure that Finnish companies have in use the state of art research knowledge in solar photovoltaic power production related to future technology and business trend so that they can develop and grow their international business. One goal is also to support local companies and endorse the solar photovoltaic power production in Finland by providing them the latest research results.

Impact

The public research project finishes at the end of 2018 and company specific projects at the end 2019. The annual volume of the research activities has been close half a million euros. Over 60 scientific per reviewed articles have been published in international journals and conferences leading already to four doctoral theses. Furthermore, seven doctoral theses will be finalized based on the results of the research projects.
