Background

European regions require a transformative shift towards seamless intermodal mobility to inspire individuals to opt for sustainable modes of transportation. Additionally, underserved communities in peripheral and rural areas face a diverse range of mobility challenges. Limitations in digital connectivity, transportation infrastructure, and services can profoundly impact these communities (in terms of social and economic consequences) by reducing travel horizons and hindering access to essential opportunities like employment, education, and social activities.

Goal

EMBRACER (intErconnecting MoBility acRoss europeAn CitiEs and subuRbs) is a project with a duration of 51 months (March 2023- May 2027), co-funded by the European Commission in the frame of the Interreg Europe Programme. EMBRACER is a region-driven project where seven underserved regions have committed to integrate public transport (PT) with informal modes (cycling, ride-hailing, car/bike/scooter sharing, on-demand transport, autonomous shuttles) to enhance the interconnection with urban areas and achieve seamless intelligent climate-resilient regional and local intermodal mobility.

The role of Tampere University’s Transport Research Centre Verne, as an Advisory Partner (AP), is to offer expertise in transport planning and policy to assist in the transfer of knowledge and good practice between partner organizations. Verne has expertise in the various aspects of the project including the delivery and operation of first and last mile services, public transport operation, shared connected and autonomous mobility, and mobility as a service (MaaS). Tampere University is also a partner in the Tampere test bed project, in collaboration with Tampere City Council ad regional stakeholders in Finland. This test bed provides an established environment for undertaking pilot testing. By leveraging the expertise, knowledge and practice generated from the Tampere test bed project, Verne has taken up a coaching role to inspire and guide our project partner from Lithuania (Municipal Enterprise "Susisiekimo paslaugos" and City of Vilnius, PP09) to plan, design and implement the proposed joint pilot action in the city of Vilnius.
