Consortium of Trust Research: Pathways to Political Trust (CONTRE)

Tampere University

The project investigates long- and short-term variations in political trust in contemporary established democracies.

Goal

There is uncertainty whether the levels of political trust are gradually declining or fluctuating within countries. Furthermore, despite decades of research, we claim that political scientists have incomplete understanding of the reasons underlying stability or change in political trust. The consortium will focus on the explanatory power of factors related to 1) political demand (individual citizens), 2) political supply (political actors and political performance) and 3) the context in which demand and supply interact. It will increase our knowledge on the pathways leading to political trust or distrust, and how the level of trust is constructed and maintained in different political and social contexts.
