Applied CleanTech (ACT) is a multidisciplinary research group at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) that develops and commercialises applied clean technology solutions for a carbon neutral future for industry and society. The group acta as a bridge builder between research, business and societal impact – with the goal of taking bold innovations rapidly from the laboratory to the market and into practical applications.
Mission and vision: towards a carbon neutral future
Our mission is to produce innovations that advance the transition towards a carbon neutral future. We aim to become Finland’s leading cleantech research group and an internationally recognised actor providing globally scalable solutions for the transformation of industry and society.
Areas of expertise
Our research is based on three mutually reinforcing areas of expertise:
1. Development of sustainable technology
We focus on energy and process technologies that support the green transition. The key research areas include:
- carbon capture and utilisation
- hydrogen production and safety
- processing of biomasses and industrial side streams
- circular economy solutions
- optimisation of industrial processes
We utilise advanced modelling, control and artificial intelligence methods, as well as experimental piloting, to enable solutions that can be directly applied in industry.
2. Commercialisation and business development
At ACT, commercialisation is an integral part of research and an objective in its own right. We
- assess the market potential of technologies
- analyse value chains and business models
- develop solutions together with industrial partners and start up environments
Impact is created through scalable products, new companies and industrial applications that deliver measurable economic and environmental benefits.
3. Impact, responsibility and societal change
Our work is grounded in broad societal transformation, supported by perspectives from life cycle assessments, responsibility, regulation and strategic decision making. We research and support organisations in implementing sustainable solutions and develop operating models that enable the co development of technology to lead to genuinely impactful changes and outcomes.
A multidisciplinary group of top experts
ACT is led by Docent, Doctor of Science (Technology) Tero Joronen, who brings extensive experience from industry, academic research and international research and innovation projects. The experts within the research group represent industrial process engineering, energy technology, business, law and physics. The group works in close cooperation with companies, research institutes and international networks.
Putting sustainable solutions into practice
We develop future oriented solutions that integrate technology, business and impact into concrete results. Our goal is to build a more sustainable, competitive and carbon neutral society.
