Marja Jalava

I am Professor of the History of Society, with a particular focus on Finnish and Nordic history in a European context (c. 1800–1980). In particular, I explore the changing ways of thinking-feeling and acting-behaving in the transition towards modern industrial capitalism. My previous research has covered topics such as the formation of modern subjectivity, the role of the university in the making of the Nordic welfare state and the history of historiography. My on-going research focuses on the social co-production of humans and farmed animals in Finnish agro-modernization from the 1880s to the 1960s.

Historical animal studies; history of historiography; intellectual history; history of emotions and experiences

Olen väitellyt tohtoriksi Suomen ja Pohjoismaiden historian alalta (Helsingin yliopisto, 2005). Lisäksi minulla on historian dosentuuri (Helsingin yliopisto, 2006) ja aatehistorian dosentuuri (Tampereen yliopisto, 2009). Olen aiemmin toiminut Helsingin yliopistossa (postdoc-tutkija, 2005-2010; akatemiatutkija, 2010-2015; poliittisen historian yliopistonlehtori, 2015-2016), Tampereen yliopistossa (määräaikainen Suomen historian professori, 2012-2013) ja Turun yliopistossa (määräaikainen poliittisen historian professori, 2016-2017; määräaikainen kulttuurihistorian professori, 2017-2022). Vuonna 2022 minut nimitettiin Tampereen yliopiston yhteiskuntahistorian professoriksi. Lisäksi olen toiminut vastuullisena johtajana Suomen Akatemian (2012-2016 ja 2025-2029) ja Koneen Säätiön (2020-2024) rahoittamissa tutkimushankkeissa.
