About me

Álvaro Corredor Ochoa, Doctor of Science in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design, is a researcher, university teacher, architect, and urbanist specialising in urban sustainability regulation and transit-oriented developments (TODs). His work focuses on the relationship between urban sustainability, regulatory frameworks, and indicator-based planning, with particular attention to how sustainability objectives can be integrated across the different phases of the urban life cycle.

Before moving fully into academia, he worked for several years in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, retail and interior design, temporary structures, and construction management in different European contexts. He also founded his own architectural studio and participated in international architecture and urban design competitions.

His doctoral research at Tampere University examined sustainability indicators applied to TODs. The dissertation introduced residential capacity as an indicator of urban sustainability and proposed a regulatory framework linking urban sustainability indicators to different phases of the urban life cycle.

He has held research-related positions at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), and has been a visiting researcher at Coventry City Council, the City of Vantaa’s Urban Planning Department, and the Technical University of Madrid. He also completed the European Climate-KIC Pioneers into Practice programme.

His publications include Challenges in Assessing Urban Sustainability (Elsevier, 2020) and two chapters in Blending Approaches Towards Sustainability Focus (Springer Nature, 2025): Sustainable Urban Policy for Transit-Oriented Developments and Residential Capacity as an Indicator of Urban Sustainability for TODs.

His main research interests include urban sustainability indicators, regulatory frameworks, transit-oriented developments, bioclimatic urbanism, social sustainability, zero-energy clusters, and the transformation of urban sprawl.
