Global crises are becoming increasingly intensified and interconnected. Understanding the relationships between citizens, institutions, and environmental processes is vital for adapting to new conditions and driving a change toward sustainability.
Transforming Societies carries a double meaning. First, social institutions founded on industrialisation, abundant environmental resources, and economic growth are undergoing profound changes. Second, societies urgently need a new generation of experts who can analyse, interpret, and guide these changes toward socially just and environmentally sustainable outcomes.
Master’s Programme in Transforming Societies offers high-quality postgraduate education rooted in the long tradition of critical and impactful social research at Tampere University. You will develop both conceptual understanding and practical skills to navigate complex social issues and promote the wellbeing of people and the planet. You will explore the key drivers of social change, develop your research skills, and focus on one of three thematic areas:
Sustainable welfare states
Urban studies
Global social policy
Social research for changing societies
This programme builds on Tampere University’s century-long tradition of societal education that has supported the development of Finnish civil society and public administration. Today, however, the questions it addresses are increasingly global. The Nordic context offers a distinct starting point for critically examining societal challenges and exploring innovative solutions.
With us, you will build a strong social scientific academic profile tailored to your specific interests in societal transformation and designed to support your academic specialisation. You will gain an understanding of contemporary social theory, policy analysis, and advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods. The courses also include challenge-based collaboration and urban labs coordinated with public, private, and non-governmental organisations.
Transdisciplinary research with individual support
Contemporary social challenges are complex and interconnected. The Transforming Societies programme brings together expertise from multiple disciplines within the Faculty of Social Sciences and beyond.
The programme is designed for students interested in understanding and addressing major societal challenges, such as inequality, climate change, urbanisation, and global governance. It is particularly suited to those with a background in social sciences or related fields who are motivated to contribute to sustainable and just societies.
Tampere and Finland provide an inspiring context for studying societal transformation. Known for its strong welfare state, high levels of education, and commitment to equality and sustainability, Finland offers a real-world example of many of the themes explored in the programme. At the same time, a critical perspective ensures that students also engage with the sustainability challenges and contradictions facing the welfare state today.
Tampere University’s close connections with public institutions, cities, and organizations further enrich your learning through practical collaboration. You can also benefit from a wide selection of free-choice courses within the university and take advantage of opportunities for international exchanges and internships. Supportive teaching staff and a welcoming study environment make your time at Tampere University both enriching and memorable as you grow into a future social science professional.
Career opportunities
As a graduate, you will be able to conduct research, develop evidence-based solutions, and undertake projects aimed at improving societies. This programme, with its timely orientation and rigorous methodological and theoretical teaching, offers you a strong foundation for doctoral studies and for a demanding professional career in the public or private sector, governmental organisations, or NGOs.
