Jordan Cooper is a professor at the American Lutheran Theological Seminary. He argues that the crisis facing Westerners in the 21st century cannot be properly discussed without the three transcendentals that have shaped the Western tradition from Socrates to the Protestant Reformation: truth, goodness and beauty. The greatest need of Western man is not technological progress, better politicians or radical revolution; our need is to be in touch with the transcendental ground of our own being - God himself.
Jani Hakkarainen explores how 18th century philosophers proposed secular ways of understanding reason, goodness, beauty and the meaning of life. He wants to draw particular attention to the German philosophy of Bildung of the time.
