Taking AI into use

The Tampere higher education community encourages the safe and responsible use of AI-based applications. All use must comply with the community’s AI policy, information security requirements, and data classification model.

The community provides Microsoft Copilot Chat for staff and adult students to support their work and studies. Other approved AI-assisted applications are listed on the page AI-assisted applications.

You can find current information related to AI skills and competence on the intranet page AI competence.

First steps in using artificial intelligence

If you're at the very beginning of using AI and don't know how to get started, follow these steps.

  1. 1

Read the most important recommendations and guidelines

Read the Tampere higher education community’s guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence.

Also familiarise yourself with the AI guidelines for teaching, research, and studying, according to your role.

  2. 2

    Watch training

Learn the basics of Copilot Chat with training: Microsoft 365 Copilot 1 - Basics

  3. 3

Get started with Copilot Chat as part of your everyday work

Start using Copilot Chat with TUNI ID
Remember to log in with your TUNI ID or else you will accidentally use the less secure free version!

Good first use cases and prompts for Copilot Chat are:

    • Translate into Finnish: <paste the text you want to translate>
    • Write in plain language: <paste the text you want to reformat>
    • Form five main headings on the topic: <add description of the topic>
    • Create image: <add a description of the content of the image>

As your skills develop, you can also try creating Copilot Chat agents.

More efficient working with Copilot

When you need a more powerful AI assistant, the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot brings AI directly into your everyday work tools and your organisation’s own data. It is integrated into Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. A Copilot button is available in these applications.Using this button, you can work with AI directly within the application and its content. For example, in Word you can edit and refine your text based on your prompt. In a Teams meeting, you can ask Copilot to create notes from the ongoing meeting.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is a paid AI assistant intended for staff use. Agree in advance with your line manager on the need for an M365 Copilot licence, as the cost of the licence will be charged to your unit or faculty.

For detailed instructions on ordering a licence and using the service, see the page Microsoft 365 Copilot

Agents automate repetitive tasks

With Copilot Chat, you can also create your own AI assistants, known as agents. A agent is given predefined instructions on how to generate responses. After that, you can use it in a chat-style interface. The agent answers questions strictly according to the instructions and information sources you have defined.
Copilot Chat agents are particularly useful for supporting frequently repeated tasks or routines. Copilot Chat agents can also be shared with others. This makes it possible, for example, to create a shared assistant for a specific task used by an entire team.

Advanced AI solutions

If the available AI applications are not sufficient and you require a more specialised AI solution, first familiarise yourself with the page How to get a new software? After that, contact the IT Helpdesk.

All proposed AI solutions go through an assessment process by IT Services. This process includes, among other things, a review of data protection and information security, an evaluation of ethics and responsibility, and a definition of the solution’s risk level.

Agent solutions for more demanding use cases

Copilot Studio agents are intended for advanced users, for example in self-service, customer service, and support processes.

The TUNI AI platform is used to implement larger-scale AI solutions that make use of the higher education community’s own data from other systems. These solutions are delivered as separate projects in cooperation with the AI platform partner. The TUNI AI platform is built on Microsoft Azure services and also includes hybrid AI infrastructure for local use of AI.
