In the basic studies in education, the student becomes familiar with historical, philosophical, sociological and psychological viewpoints on education, as well as the cultural and social questions concerning education. The essential topics of basic studies in education are human development, learning, education and teaching, in addition to education and educational expertise at different stages of the life course. During the studies, the fundamental questions of educational research and study ethics are examined.
Upon completion of the basic studies in education, the student has a broad understanding based on scientific knowledge regarding education and learning in society during different times, in separate contexts and at different stages of the life course. The student is acquainted with educational research knowledge and understands its significance both in society and as part of educational expertise. The student can critically analyse information about educational institutions and pedagogical practices from the viewpoints of equality and diversity. Furthermore, the student is able to utilise different academic study and work techniques, as well as develop competencies for educational expertise and research.
