Current issues in democracy, politics and governance, Seminar

The module is composed of the following assignments:

1. Pre-assignment: Reading (TBC) AND a) an essay on a chosen theme, commenting the reading OR b) a sample of work in progress – BA or MA thesis, PhD dissertation – related to one or more of the following themes: democracy, participation, politics, civil society, civic action, social movements, cities, sustainable urban development, global diffusion of policy innovations, ethnographic research, critical social theory. The sample should be 3-10 pages and include the current structure of table of contents of the work it is part of, as well as, if possible, a section with data and (preliminary) analysis.

2. Participation to the workshop day on December 9th at 10am to 4 pm, including a lecture by Gianpaolo Baiocchi and two workshops on the pre-assignments.

3. Participation to the Snapshots of 21st Century Citizenship: Ethnographic and Data Mining Approaches to Young Citizens’ Participation conference on December 13-14 in which keynote talks are given by professors Eeva Luhtakallio, Isaac Airial Reed, Laurent Thèvenot and Gianpaolo Baiocchi.

4. Learning diary on the conference participation, to be submitted by December 18 (can be submitted also in Finnish).
