The general objective of the licentiate’s degree is that the postgraduate student
1) profoundly familiarizes him-/herself with the research field and its societal significance;
2) gains abilities to independently and critically apply scientific research methods and create new knowledge;
3) familiarizes him-/herself with the progress of the own research field, its scientific challenges and the relevant research methods;
4) achieves abilities to proceed studies towards a doctoral degree;
5) achieves sufficient communication and language skills and other abilities to carry out broad and demanding expert and development tasks in the working life and in international collaboration.
A licentiate thesis equals to 90 ECTS of work.
For a licentiate degree, in addition to the licentiate thesis, a student must complete the same studies (60 ECTS) as for a doctoral degree. Detailed information about the requirements is available in each Doctoral Programme’s curriculum.
Where applicable, the guidelines concerning doctoral dissertations can also be applied to licentiate theses.
