Various courses may be organised under this heading. In general, at least one research method is looked at and practiced in each course. The doctoral researcher learns the general skills needed in qualitative data gathering and the basic use of the methods. S/he develops her/his skills as a user of these methods and gets ready to assess how well the methods suit her/his own research. The students learn the basics of managing and storing electronic data. It is possible in some courses to plan the data gathering of one’s own thesis and to get feedback from a supervisor.
