Various courses may be included under this heading. In general, each course deals with a particular method which is used to gather quantitative data. Some courses look at ready-made data and how they can be used efficiently. The doctoral researcher gains general knowledge about the methods of gathering quantitative data, especially about sampling methods and the opportunities and limitations they entail. S/he learns about the basic uses of quantitative methods and gets practice in their use. S/he will also gain the skills needed to estimate how relevant the methods are for her/his own research. Some courses deal with planning the data gathering for the thesis and the students get feedback from a supervisor.
