Core content
  • Electrochemical cell and its notation, Nernst equation and the connection between cell potential and equilibrium constant.
  • Statistical thermodynamics: Boltzman distribution, dominant configuration and their and its physical significance. Molecular partition function and molecular energy levels. Calculating the thermodynamic quantites from molecular partition functions.
  • Transport phenomena: diffusion, heat transport in gas phase, viscosity, ionic conductivity.
  • Chemical kinetics: reaction rate, rate laws, integrated rate laws, order of reaction, elementary reactions, steady-state approximation, activated complex theory.
  • Complex reaction mechanisms, homogeneous catalysis, enzyme catalysis, heterogenous catalysis, Langmuir adsorption isotherm, radical chain reactions.
Complementary knowledge
  • Cell potential and activity coefficients.
  • Canonical partition function and residual entropy.
  • viscocity for liquids, experimental setups for determining diffusion coefficients, measuring viscosities, sedimentation.
  • Determining the rate of reactions, diffusion controlled reactions, potential energy surfaces in chemical reactions, experimental techniques for measuring reaction rates.
