Core content
- Week 1: An overview of the FACTS and VSC-HVDC transmission philosophies. A review of the main FACTS and VSC-HVDC installations in the world
- Week 2: Power transmission equipment with conventional thyristor valves (SVC and TCSC) and HVDC links
- Week 3: FACTS equipment with IGBT valves (STATCOM, UPFC, VSC-HVDC)
- Week 4: Modelling of selected FACTS equipment in power flows; assessing their impact on network-wide applications, using power flows
- Week 5: Modelling of VSC-HVDC transmission systems in power flows; assessing their impact on network-wide applications, using power flows
- Week 6: Optimal Power Flows (OPF) using Newton's method; representation of selected FACTS and VSC-HVDC equipment in OPF; Assessing their impact on network-wide applications, using OPF
- Week 7: Electromagnetic transients in power systems: representation of FACTS and VSC-HVDC equipment in electromagnetic transient programs and test cases using PSCAD/EMTDC
