The course engages students in critical discussions of the most influential conceptualizations of agency from psychology (e.g., Bandura) and sociology (e.g., Emirbayer and Mische) and their adoption in the field of education. The course also introduces an approach to agency based on Vygotsky’s work. This approach is contrasted with the two other strands of conceptualizations to explore its utility for educators and learners. In particular the course explores ways in which the Vygotskian approach can contribute to fostering transformative agency and to creating conditions to concretely enact agencyby means of Change Laboratories.
