International outlook and global responsibility

A speech act is one that we accomplish using language. J.L. Austin was the first to formulate a theory about how we use language to do things—shifting focus from the descriptive content of an utterance to its functional potential as a tool for accomplishing a potentially unlimited number of purposes. We will read the foundational texts that launched speech act theory and explore some of its more recent incarnations in a variety of areas including politeness, discourse analysis and second language teaching.
