International outlook and global responsibility

In this course we will explore the diverse strategies for expressing negation in natural languages from a number of perspectives, including logic, semantics, morphosyntax, typology and pragmatics. Topics include: negation and scope, polarity items and negative concord, antonymy and reversal, and morphosyntactic variety in the expression of negation (for example, not, no one, un- in English). Students will be asked to devote special attention to the particulars of negation in Finnish, notably the partitive of negation.

This course will be offered during the academic year 2021-2022.
