International outlook and global responsibility

This course is aimed at students who wish to become English teachers. The course is meant as a “bridge” between the linguistic studies and pedagogical studies and thus recommended to be taken before entering teacher education. The course discusses where and how the linguistic / theoretical knowledge acquired in language studies can be applied in language teaching at school. We will ponder on how different theoretical understandings of language have affected language teaching over time (as reflected in different types of teaching methods), and what the present-day notion of language skills holds. Special attention will be given to aspects that especially English teachers should be aware of in today’s English teaching, and emphasis is put on the concept of language awareness and the teacher’s own conceptualisation of language.
