Oma esittely

I am currently working as the PI of "Journalistic Future Narratives in and about Nato-era Finland" (2025-2027, funded by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation). The project investigates future-oriented storytelling and speculative scenarios in Finnish news media after the beginning of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, especially regarding national security and possible Russian aggression against Finland. We ask, 1) how contemporary journalism uses narratives as epistemic instruments for producing and communicating future-oriented knowledge, 2) what kind of impact such future-oriented storytelling has on public discourse, and 3) what epistemological and ethical challenges come with telling journalistic stories about the future.

My previous project, "Age of Uncertainty" (2023-2025, Tampere Institute for Advanced Study), theorized, mapped, and analyzed speculative storytelling as a rhetorical and epistemic practice across contemporary fiction and nonfiction. I was particularly interested in stories of climate futures in programmatic climate fiction, science communication, and journalism. The project thus also continued my long-standing investigation of storytelling as a heuristic tool for confronting global crises, which I began in my first postdoctoral project, "Global-scale Poetics" (2022-2023, funded by Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation).
