This course aims to (1) increase awareness of the ethics and sustainability considerations in the development and application of digital technology and (2) offer approaches and methods for critical and sustainable design practice. The course provides concepts and perspectives for holistically and multidisciplinarily analyzing existing digital technologies and methods for putting the critical perspectives into practice in design of digital products and services. The course draws theoretical perspectives from Ethics of Technology, Science and Technology Studies, Critical Algorithm Studies, AI ethics, and design perspectives from speculative and critical design, value-sensitive design, design fiction, future studies, responsible design, and human-centered design.
